Jalandhar: Curfew was clamped here on Sunday night and the Army was
put on alert as tension gripped the district after violence flared up
and protesters resorted to arson within hours after the head of a Dera
sect was attacked in a gurdwara shootout in Vienna.
Six buses were damaged in stone-pelting in Phagwara and Adampur, near
here, and a truck was torched. Traffic was blocked on National
Highway-1.
An ATM of a bank was also set on fire.
The police said curfew was clamped in Jalandhar as a precautionary measure.
The Jalandhar cantonment station was attacked by protesters who
targeted an EMU train and a passenger train, the police said.
Two express trains, including an Amritsar-bound Shatabdi, were
stranded at the station here after protesters gathered there in large
numbers.
Badal's appeal
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and Deputy
Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to the people to remain calm.
The protesters also gave a call for Phagwara bandh for Monday.
Senior Superintendent of Police R.K. Jaiswal said policemen had been
deployed at sensitive points. — PTI
